Meet our Founder and Counsellor

Denise Thong

Bachelor in Applied Science, Food Science and Technology (National University of Singapore), Masters in Human Nutrition (Deakin University), Masters in Counselling (Swinburne University) and a Registered Counsellor and Clinical Member of the Singapore Association for Counselling (SAC number: C0771).

She is certified in Transactional Analysis and Choice Theory Reality Therapy and trained in Cognitive Behavioural Therapy and Solution-Focused Brief Therapy. She is currently clocking hours to be a certified psychodramatist.

She is also the administrator of a SFBT monthly supervision group run by Mr. Alan Yeo. She also helped establish the peer supervision group at A Space Between to help counsellors and psychologists grow in their practice through mutual support and learnings.

While her experience is mainly with individuals and dyads, she also runs therapy groups using action-based experiential methods.

Denise spent 1.5 years interning at a private psychiatric clinic. That provided her with extensive hands-on training in psychopathology and psychopharmacology which gives her an edge in working with clients with a wide range of diagnoses (e.g. Autism Spectrum Disorder, Anxiety, Depression, Dissociative Identity Disorder, Adjustment Disorder, Personality Disorders).

In addition, she has volunteer experience at (i) WIRA (Women In Recovery Association, Changi Prison after-care service), (ii) Touch Community Services (hearing impaired clients) and (iii) St Anne’s church (volunteer counsellor and special needs catechist/befriender).

Her volunteer experience at WIRA helped her gain hands-on experience with drug addiction and her work with St. Anne’s church provided her with years of experience dealing with children and youths with special needs and their family systems.

She was class leader when she studied for her Masters in Counselling. She did a stellar job mediating between the management and the students and looked after the welfare of her classmates. In short, she did a good job as “class mummy”. Today, she stays in contact with her classmates and is always ready to make fitting referrals. In the private sphere, Denise is married with two young boys (9 years old and 1 year old).
